Konglomerat

Malmö, Sweden
2022

Konglomerat is a joint effort between Förstberg Ling, Monadnock and Tredje Natur for a pre-qualified invited competition for Malmö Stad, Fastighets AB Trianon and Lernacken Fastigheter.

How to combine the distinct maritime character of Limhamn with the industrial heritage of the site? The proposal Konglomerat traces on the good qualities of both, merges and amplifies these into a new ensemble of buildings. Konglomerat aims for a comfortable and tailor-made residential environment, with the ambition of delivering a top-notch, future-proof extension to Limhamn. One which is new and simultaneously blends in, by resonating the intrinsic layout of the former industrial complex.

This former silo-conglomerate used to form a far more extensive group of buildings: a rich assemblage of industrial-elements that grew- and changed over time for ever-changing functional reasons. Learning from the past and the existing, the proposal Konglomerat is based on exactly the same spatial idea. The urban and architectural strategy propagates the idea of a flexible ‘conglomerate’ of distinct, individual structures. Each building offering its own specific living conditions, altogether providing for a residential project which contains a high level of diversity. Making it possible to include several types of inhabitants.

Konglomerat offers an agile concept. As it includes the possibility of integrating relics of the industrial heritage, spinning them into the future with a second-life. Although Konglomerat proposes to maintain one of the silos, the idea of creating a new profiled landmark covers the complete ensemble: the old and the new. Both the buildings and the square.

Although Konglomerat suggests a variety which includes the second-life of the silo, this should be part of dialogue, the strategy remains intact. Also, other parts of the proposal have the ability to be subject to change, whenever the conjuncture changes or new insights arise concerning the programming.

The proposed layout of the conglomerate is informed by several conditions, such as connecting to the urban fabric of the context, sunlight, the parking grid and accessibility. Each building functions as a stand-alone, with an own core independent of the others, but does response to the position of the other buildings – finding the right balance altogether. However, this does mean the volumes are subject to change, as the layout is not completely fixed – on contrary: the layout of the conglomerate provides for a high level of flexibility.

The emphasize the conglomerate simultaneously as a group of buildings anticipating to each other, the ground floors have elaborate setbacks, which are generous for life between the buildings – offering more space and more diagonal views and connections.

Clearly, this proposal exists of buildings making strong figures – and buildings being more silent, both of these should be able to land within this conglomerate.
