Architects rather not talk of beauty, it is said. But values can be expressed in other words. Bright, well-balanced, robust and comfortable. Or harsh, cracked and disintegrating. Function and beauty have a complicated relationship.
Beauty disconnected from awareness of function might be beyond humans. We experience objects in context, we relate to them with our bodies. And whether we give it thought or not, functionality becomes part of our experience.
Through an architectural model we relate to planned future functions, but also to materials, space and our presence within that space. Just as other languages the model is an instrument. And just as other languages the model can be used to describe function, but also - as in poetry - to explore beauty.
